New York Times Article, “When Bail Is Out of Defendant’s Reach, Other Costs Mount”

The New York Times published a provocative article on the issue of bail and pre-trial detention today.  The U.S. leads the world in the number of pre-trial detainees, according to the National Institute of Corrections, an agency of the Department of Justice.  The article highlights a recurring issue in Alameda County courts: when poor defendants are forced to plead guilty to gain their freedom because they can’t make bail.  The entire article can be found here: http://nyti.ms/1MIBZ7K
